I could see it from the road
Playfully dipping and swooping
Either oblivious to
or in wanton disregard of
dire warnings and devastating news
My mind went to the child
on the other end of the string
Were they enjoying the clear sky
the cool breezes
without a clue about the danger,
the sorrow, the confusion in
our world
“Just a little longer.” He would say
when his mother called him back inside
to finish his lessons
Just a little longer.
